Classic Bellini Cocktail- Thirsty Thursday 12

[ti_audio name=”newyear” autoplay=”1″ repeat=”1″ randomize=”1″ volume=”20″] The Classic Bellini cocktail was created by Giuseppe Cipriani. He founded Harry’s Bar in Venice in the 1930’s. While sitting at his bar one day pondering about what kind of drink he would like to be served, he mixed up a Bellini with the fruit that was in season. White peaches. The classic Bellini cocktail, a delicate sparkling drink, was made from the purée of fresh white peaches and prosecco Italian sparkling wine to produce the most captivating pink hue. Its pink colour reminded Giuseppe of the toga worn by someone in the famous … Continue reading Classic Bellini Cocktail- Thirsty Thursday 12

Cranberry Strawberry Cooler and Festive Cheer

This festive season spread some cheer with this Cranberry Strawberry Cooler. Full of warm holiday reds and sweet tasting berries, cranberry and strawberry together – a winner. It sometimes gets so hot during this time of the year that honestly, all I want to do is sip on something refreshing all day. Forget the food and cooking…this cooler/punch goes down really well and doesn’t leave you feeling full. What I like about it, apart from it being really cold, is the floating strawberries on the ice – so you take a sip and a bite of strawberry at the same … Continue reading Cranberry Strawberry Cooler and Festive Cheer

Kiwi Lime Sorbet – Not for Adults

[hopos id=’1′] The children will love this Kiwi Lime Sorbet and Greengage Jelly with its green vibrant colours. It just screams ‘YUMMY’. No alcohol, just pure fruity flavours. I like the texture and flavour contrasts in this little cup. Anything with lemon and lime is a winner for me. I have used greengage flavoured jelly here but any colour or flavour will do. I guess a bright red jelly will look festive too. If you’ve never made sorbet before, don’t be intimidated. All it is is simply a semi-frozen blend of fruit juice or purée and a sugar syrup. Sometimes … Continue reading Kiwi Lime Sorbet – Not for Adults

Summertime and Beer Shandy – Thirsty Thursday 11

[ti_audio name=”Summertime” autoplay=”1″ repeat=”1″ volume=”20″] [hr] “Roll out those hazy, crazy, lazy days of Summer… those days of soda and pretzels and beer…” Summer has arrived. It’s great outdoors… I can finally potter around in the garden again and harvest this season’s herbs. It also means – sunshine, beaches, sunsets and sundowners… On days like this there is nothing more refreshing than an ice cold Beer Shandy. I am a relatively short person…that means alcohol doesn’t have far to travel to my head. Because of that I can tolerate one drink and that’s it for me. With a beer shandy, … Continue reading Summertime and Beer Shandy – Thirsty Thursday 11

Chilli Bites and chilly weather

[ti_audio name=”Ambient” autoplay=”1″ repeat=”1″ randomize=”1″ volume=”30″] Generally I am a fan of all things chilli! Chilli Bites are one of my favourite snacks. The only thing ‘chilli’ I don’t like is chilly weather. I am glad that Summer has arrived and we can now head off to the beach with our picnic basket filled with little nibbly bits. One of my favourite lazy day spots is the beach. Soaking up the sun, feeling the sand between my toes, listening to the waves beating on the rocks…sipping iced tea or an ice-cold beer shandy and snacking on finger food. I like … Continue reading Chilli Bites and chilly weather

Sparkling Watermelon Chiller- Thirsty Thursday 10

Beat the heat with this cool Sparkling Watermelon Chiller. This is such a simple drink to make – use up your leftover watermelon, add some sparkle with sparkling water, lemonade or seltzer and loads of ice for the chill. I usually make puréed fruit juices from fruit that is turning over ripe. I add some simple syrup and toss it in the freezer to use as sorbet, granita or for drinks like this. It adds a vibrant inviting colour and it’s a healthy alternative to sodas. Perfect for summer. To make simple syrup – boil 1/2 cup of sugar with … Continue reading Sparkling Watermelon Chiller- Thirsty Thursday 10

Brownie Topped Toffee Sundae

While I find myself with some time on my hands, I think it’s time to finish all the drafts I have accumulated and start posting them before the season changes. I have been quite lazy when it comes to cooking lately. We have had heatwave after heatwave in Pretoria and I just can’t bear to be behind a hot stove or oven. So, I find myself with many summer inspired posts. We’ve had mainly salads and light ‘tapas’ in our home. And loads of ice-cream, sundaes and shakes. I often use my husband and kids as taste ‘guinea pigs’ for … Continue reading Brownie Topped Toffee Sundae
